| Overall the 21st century has
not been kind to millions of teens seeking paying jobs. In
fact, the jobless rate for teens 16-19 has
increased steadily since the year 2000.
2004 virtually tied with 2003 to be one of the worst
years for teen employment in 57 years. Only about 42% of teens
16-19 found paying jobs in 2004 according to the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. And, these figures overlook millions
of 14-15 year olds that also want paying jobs.
As a result, millions of teens who wanted to work could not
find jobs.
There are encouraging signs that 2005 will be better
for teens.
The U.S. economy appears to be improving. More companies
have announced increased hiring plans. We’ve noticed
more “we’re hiring” signs at places that
traditionally have hired teens. And, Americans are taking
their vacations again and vacation spots will need to hire
people to service the vacationers.
Everyday we contact businesses and organizations and ask
them to promote their openings on Teens4Hire.org. Please keep
in mind that even though most businesses and organizations
do not advertise their openings directly to teens, they MAY
have openings teens could fill.
But, teens should not expect to be handed a paying job. You’ll
have to earn it. You’ll have to “work” to
land a job. The job market remains very competitive. There
are more teens seeking jobs than jobs available and companies
still tell us that they’d prefer to hire older workers
instead of teens without experience. You should begin “the
hunt for a job” sooner rather than later.
Opportunities for those 18 and older, with high GPAs and
interpersonal skills will be the greatest.
For 16-17 year olds, the job market will be very competitive.
No doubt the jobs available will go to teens that demonstrate
maturity and responsibility.
Fewer paying jobs will be available for 14-15 year olds.
Current U.S. Child Labor Laws restrict the kinds of jobs and
hours teens in this age group can work.
Regardless of your age, if you want a paying job you must
demonstrate that you are willing to work, have a positive
attitude, are reliable, have the basic education required
to do the job and understand the needs of the business.
